Back when I was 6 years old in the 80s, I saw my first cartoon of Mickey mouse and friends in black and white on my color TV. I would gather with my cousins to watch Donald Duck angrily hit things. What a fun first memory of this post that takes a trip down the hall of cartoons from the 80s to early 2000s.
I later moved to Saudi where my Dad worked in a petrochemical plant. There was my first encounter with Sesame Street. I would return home from school and would be glued to the TV watching it and other cartoons that introduced to be variety of looney tunes, pink panther and Mr. Magoo.
Over there in Saudi, there were many TV channels that showed different cartoon shows. But my absolute favorite during my teen years was Aramco channel that aired Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the first time and I was hooked. Swat Kats another favorite of mine aired around the same time. The first anime I watched as Captain Majid a soccer anime all in Arabic, that I didn’t understand a bit. Of course, later on I found out it was a Japanese anime called Captain Tsubasa.
I returned to India and encountered my first anime in English – Ninja Robots. At that time, I still thought it was a cartoon from USA. Little did I know it was anime from the east, from Japan. Toonami started to air with Johnny Quest that I adored the concept.
I then went to study at University in good old USA. While I love cartoons it was the time in the late 90s that introduced Toonami to me. Sailor Moon, DBZ, Reboot etc. From there I started watching and reading many animes and mangas.
In 2005, when I had already started working, came the absolute gem Avatar: The last airbender. A fantastic show where a live action remake has been made for the kids of this generation.
Why did I create this blog reminiscing about cartoons and early anime, mostly because they were a big part of my growing up and despite my Dad always telling my to stop watching cartoons and to study, I managed to watch all the cartoons I wanted to as a kid. I was mesmerized by the character development, funny dialogues, awesome music and even plot for some of them even if it was rescuing the girl from the bad guys at that time.
For a 80s kid, I had it pretty good my friends 😊Blessed for it.
