Self and No-Self

I am admirer of Jiddu Krishnamurti’s work. For people who don’t know him he was an Indian philosopher and a thinker who emphasized the use of inquiry to find the source of spirituality. If you have time, please read and watch his videos on YouTube. It will enlighten you on how to think and inquire.

Today’s topic is about Self and No-Self? Who or what is “Self”? Self to me can be defined as me, ego or the observer. Observer is state of mind that is always observing how you are feeling and what you are thinking. When there is an Observer, there is always thinking. Thinking about the things that happened in the past or imagining things that will happen in the future. The observed can be anything from a physical thing that you see, something that you smell, taste, feel etc. Basically, sensory perceptions. The observed can also be an emotion you are going through this instant like frustration, sadness, joy.

No-Self is when Observer ceases to exist. This usually happens during the state of “flow”. When you are so immersed in an activity, You lose sight of time and thinking isn’t being observed by the Observer. Natural creativity flows through you as a medium from great unknown, source, consciousness, Universe, Divine etc. When you are passionate about something we do it with full attention and focus. We get completely lost in it. That’s when there is No-Self. It’s a moment of pure being, untainted by thoughts and judgments.

Krishnamurti’s teachings often encourage individuals to observe their thoughts and emotions without judgment, allowing for a deeper understanding of the self. By doing so, one can transcend the ego and reach a state of No-Self, where true creativity and connection to the divine or the universe can be experienced.

Everyone should try to do creative things they love so that they can be in flow. Be in the present moment and be fully engaged in that activity. A truly rewarding experience.
